WPA Federal Theatre Project From 1935-1939 the Federal Theatre
Project was a vital part of the WPA (Works
Progress Administration), a nationwide program
established by President Roosevelt to provide jobs
for millions of unemployed men and women.
Over 1200 productions were staged across the
country employing performers, writers, directors,
designers, musicians, and producers, as well as
the artists responsible for the memorable posters
